England Vs Czech Republic Head-To-Heads

England and the Czech Republic have played each other three times since 2008. The first of these was a friendly match at Wembley, when the two sides drew 2-2.

The two sides next met in qualification for Euro 2020, with England winning their home match 5-0 after a hat-trick from Raheem Sterling. But the Czech Republic showed plenty of spirit in their home match, beating England 2-1.

England Form

England were far from impressive in their 0-0 draw with Scotland on Sunday, but that draw did at least maintain an unbeaten run following seven wins over Croatia (1-0), Iceland (4-0), San Marino (5-0), Albania (2-0), Poland (2-1), Austria (1-0), and Romania (1-0).

Gareth Southgate will again have been pleased to keep another clean sheet, and another one of those will be enough for England to progress to the knockout stages at Euro 2021.

Czech Republic Form

The Czech Republic are the surprise package of Group D so far in Euro 2021 and, after a 2-0 opening win over Scotland, a draw against Croatia means they are now top of the group.

The Czech’s form was mixed in the build-up to the tournament but, having been beaten by Scotland in October, they’ve probably improved since. They lost 1-0 in Germany in November but followed that defeat with wins over Israel, Slovakia, and Estonia.

A 1-1 draw with Belgium was also a good result, but that was followed by defeat in Wales and Italy before they got back on the winning trail against Albania in their final warm-up game.

What Team Will England Play Against The Czech Republic?

Second-guessing Gareth Southgate’s team selections isn’t always easy, but he was quick to squash the rumours that Harry Kane would be dropped after England’s captain was substituted against Scotland. We can only speculate about Southgate’s preferred fullbacks, while Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson may also play a part, but only time will tell whether that’s as subs or in the starting line-up.

It will be hard to leave out Raheem Sterling after the Manchester City striker’s hat-trick against the Czech Republic in 2019, which means fellow Man City player Phil Foden may again get the nod over Marcus Rashford.

Will England Beat The Czech Republic?

There are 36 places between England and the Czech Republic in the FIFA world rankings, with England ranked fourth and the Czech Republic 40th. But the results in Group D so far, and their head-to-heads in 2019, suggest there’s not as big a gulf in class as the rankings suggest.

The bookies make England odds-on to win at home, but England aren’t as short a price as they were against Scotland.

England are by far the better team on paper, but it could be wise to factor in motivation when it comes to trying to predict the result of England vs the Czech Republic. Both teams have four points and, with Croatia and Scotland having just one point each, a draw will be enough for both England and the Czech Republic to progress to the knockout stages.

Best Bet For England Vs Czech Republic

The nation has berated Gareth Southgate and his team for their poor performance against Scotland but there is an argument that a 0-0 draw was a tactical masterpiece by the England manager. Finishing top of Group D could lead to a dangerous passage in the knockout stages and Southgate now has England in the perfect position in second to avoid playing either France, Germany, or Portugal in the next round.

A draw will be an ideal result for England, as they’ll finish second and open up the possibility of an easier passage into the latter stages of the tournament. Of course, Southgate can’t come out and say this, but the performance against Scotland suggested it had certainly occurred to England’s players that finishing second would enhance their chances of winning the tournament.

Seven clean sheets in eight games also means that England’s defence is full of confidence, so there’s every chance that this match will be another dull affair. Neither team needs to win and both sides may be happy to play the match out and avoid needless injuries and suspensions, while also giving some of their substitutes some time on the pitch.

All that means that the best bet for England vs Czech Republic is the draw.
