England Vs Germany Head-To-Heads

England first played Germany at football in 1930 when the two teams shared a friendly 3-3 draw.

England’s finest match against Germany was their 4-2 win at the 1966 World Cup, but it’s not gone so well for England in major tournaments since. Germany took their revenge in the 1970 World Cup and again beat England two years later in the European Championships.

Lots more people than Gazza shed a tear when we lost to Germany in a penalty shootout in the 1990 World Cup semi-finals, and we suffered a similar fate at the 1996 European Championships.

There was the memorable 5-1 win for England in 2001 but Germany again crushed our World Cup dreams in 2010.

Since then, England and Germany have played four international friendlies, with Germany winning two, England one, and one draw.

England Form

England haven’t pleased everyone in their group games at Euro 2021, but Gareth Southgate’s team topped the table after 1-0 wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic and a 0-0 draw against Scotland. While it’s been disappointing that England haven’t scored more goals, three clean sheets provide a solid foundation to build on.

England are also now on an unbeaten nine-match run, Czech Republic (1-0), Scotland (0-0), Croatia (1-0), Iceland (4-0), San Marino (5-0), Albania (2-0), Poland (2-1), Austria (1-0), and Romania (1-0).

Germany Form

Germany failed to make much of an impact in their 1-0 defeat to France but then came out on the right side of a 4-2 thriller with Portugal. Needing just a draw against Hungary in their last group match to book their place in the round-of-16, the Germans twice fought back from a goal down to draw 2-2 and qualify as the runner-up from Group F.

Germany’s form was mixed coming into the tournament, winning their final friendly 7-1 against Latvia. Before that, they drew with Denmark and lost in World Cup qualifying to North Macedonia. They were also embarrassed 6-0 by Spain in the Nations League back in November.

Will England Beat Germany?

England vs Germany is the highlight of the round-of-16 matches and a quarterfinal against Sweden or Ukraine means the winner of this match has a great chance of at least reaching the semi-finals.

Gareth Southgate has tinkered with his starting line-up in each of the three matches so far and it will be interesting to see how he sets his team out.

The gut feeling is he will err on the side of caution and adopt a defence-first strategy, while hoping to sneak another 1-0 win, a score-line that four of England’s last nine games have produced.

While France managed to keep a clean sheet against Germany, the Germans have shown that they can score goals with four against Portugal and two against Hungary. If England sit back too much, it’s easy to imagine that Germany will grow more confident in possession as the game goes on. A goal for Germany would see England have to abandon their tactics in search of an equalizer, and there’s a chance an early goal could set up a thriller.

But it’s difficult to be confident that England will win this game, so it’s hard to recommend a bet in the outright market. It’s also difficult to predict who will qualify, so that’s also a no-bet market.

Best Bets For England Vs Germany

It’s been a while since there has been such a meaningful match between England and Germany but, with Germany looking more vulnerable than in many recent years, England will fancy taking their revenge for a variety of painful defeats.

Perhaps the match will be a damp squib that either side wins by a solitary goal, but crucial matches between England and Germany have been a rollercoaster for England fans ever since that emotional World Cup win in 1966.

The dreaded world ‘penalties’ springs instantly to mind when you think back to the 1990s and it will be no surprise if we’re again treated to such as thrilling climax. Luckily, half of England’s players are too young to remember those painful memories, though manager Southgate probably still has nightmares.

But as Southgate knows what it’s like to miss a penalty at a major championship, his players will surely have been practicing them in the build-up to the tournament. 12/1 for England to win on penalties, that will do for me, though 11/2 for either team to win on penalties is probably a safer bet.
