Chelmsford Stakes preview and tips
The Chelmsford Stakes Race is one of the three Group 2 Races to be held on Saturday, 3rd September. The race serves as a lead-up for tougher runs in Melbourne and Sydney during spring, for instance, the George Main Stakes, which will be held 2 weeks later.
Previously Winx completed a double in 2017 with a win at Chelmsford and George Main Stakes. Similarly, in 2015, Kermadec finished second at Chelmsford only to win George Main later.
Top performers usually lead the race odds from Sydney, who have taken part in the Winx Stakes two weeks earlier. In 2021, Think it over won the race after finishing 6th place in Winx Stakes.
While there have been a few upsets, Chris Waller’s trained horses have so far performed well at Chelmsford, including Hawkspur, who won in 2013 and 2014, Winx in 2017, and Unforgettable in 2018. In 2020, Mister Sea Wolf, the race favourite, led the race landing Chris Waller his 6th win in nine years.
To bet on the Chelmsford Stakes, it is a good idea to look at performers from the Winx Stakes having good records over the mile, weight-for-age runners with good track performance, and a good track record on Randwick.
Moreover, Chris Waller-trained in-form mares or other Group 1 runners that have dropped from grade are good candidates for the race.
