Grand Prix Stakes Preview

The Grand Prix Stakes is a Group 3 race held as a part of the Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival. The 2200m race is held at the Eagle Farm Racecourse and is run by 3-year-old runners with set weight conditions.

The Grand Prix Stakes was held for the first time in 1971. Until 2019, the race was held in winter, and since then, it has been moved to the summer campaign. The Grand Prix Stakes is considered a potential lead-up for the Group 1 Queensland Derby and Queensland Oaks due early next year. The last horse to complete a Grand Prix Stakes and Queensland Derby was Brambles in 2012, while several others horses have also accomplished this feat in the past.

Grand Prix Stakes Betting Tips

The betting odds for the Grand Prix Stakes are usually led by young mares with good performance stats and form for similar distance races. Runners with a winning record at the Brisbane track also have a good chance. A good betting tip is to look for runners coming from a previous Group 2 event, coming off from an interstate spring lead-up race.

Moreover, runners, including last-start winners, returning participants that finished well in earlier Group 3 events in that year, and promising and in-form local runners, are usually a part of the Grand Prix Stakes with shorter odds.  In the last three years, favourites have done well, with Chain of Honour winning in 2019 at $1.9, The Elanora winning in 2020 at $2.35, and Gypsy Goddess winning in 2021 at $1.24.
