McEwen Stakes Preview And Tips
The McEwen Stakes serves as a nice starting point for gallopers headed for the Carnival’s Group 1 sprint features. It also serves as a starting point for runners heading for 1200m Group 1 Manikato Stakes held at Moonee Valley in October and the 1200m Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic held at Flemington at Melbourne Cup Carnival.
For betting purposes, it is a good idea for runners with previous wins at Moonee Valley, particularly sprinters leading in 1000m events. Also, gallopers with experience in previous Group 1 events in previous seasons like the Moir Stakes, a 1000m Group 1 race held at the Moonee Valley.
In previous years, winners and strong performers of McEwen have achieved success in Group 1 events later in the season. However, there have been upsets as well. In 2021, Inferno won the race.
In 2018 Nature Strip won the McEwen and won the double with Moir Stakes and VRC Sprint Classic in the following year. Similarly, in 2021, September Run finished third in the McEwen and won the William Reid Stakes the next year.
