Date: 13th August 2022
Race Type: Group 2
Racing event: Melbourne Spring Carnival
Prize Money: $300,000
The PB Lawrence Stakes will be the first Group 2 race in the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The weight-for-age race runs over a distance of 1400m. The race will be held on the same day as the Group 3 races, including the 1100m Vain Stakes and the 1100m Quezette Stakes.
Horses competing in the race are generally in line for the Memsie Stakes in September, the first group 1 race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, and the WX Cox Plate in October. Thus it would not be wrong to assume that the race is a good kick-off point for the stronger participants who are gearing up for the longer-distance events in the Melbourne and Sydney Spring Carnivals.
Classic runners with an experience in group 1 events have fared well in PB Lawrence in the past. Mares seem to have a good record in the Lawrence PB Stakes, winning the last three consecutive races, including Sierra Sue in 2021, Savatiano in 2020, and Mystic Journey in 2019.
Mystic Journey and Savatiano were the latest favourites to salute for bettors. Mystic Journey was also the second favourite mare in the 2020 PB Lawrence Stakes event but unfortunately finished the race in 8th place.
A good tip is to back the classic single-figure runners with Group 1 experience from the latest running events. The Missile Stakes can be a good indicator as the 9-year-old Hard Empire led the race at $101 on 6th August at Randwick. This was, however, a major upset as Forbidden Love and Nimalee were regarded as strong candidates.
