The Ingham Preview
The Ingham, previously known as The Villiers Stakes, is a Group 2 race held at the Royal Randwick as a part of the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival. The 1600m race is reserved for horses aged three-year-old and up and is an open handicap run. This year the prize money for the race is $2m, a huge boost from the previous year’s $750,000.
Betting Tips for The Ingham
The winners of The Villiers Stakes, now named The Ingham, perform well in the Autumn Racing Carnival held in Melbourne and Sydney in the next year. The Ingham winner is also given a ballot exemption for the next edition of the Doncaster Mile, a Group 1 1600m race held at the Randwick.
In recent years, runners with betting odds under $10 have dominated the Ingham. For instance, Quackerjack and Sky Boy were favourites of 2019 and 2018 and won the race with odds of $3.8 and $3.2, respectively. At the same time, there have been a few upsets, including Sense of Occasion winning in 2016 with odds of $31 and All Legal winning in 2012 with odds of $17. The odds for the race usually favour sprinters with lower weights and good recent form.
A good betting tip is to consider runners from the Festival Stakes and runners with good performances at Randwick. With the exception of Sky Boy and Quackerjack favourites have not enjoyed a good strike rate in The Ingham, so it is important to look for runners with good form.
Another good betting tip is to back male runners, as the last mare to win the race was Greysful Glamour in 2020 and before her Dances on Waves won in 2010.
