The Metropolitan Preview
The Metropolitan is a Group I handicap race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival scheduled on 1st October at the Royal Randwick Racecourse. The race is open to horses aged three and up and runs over a distance of 2400m.
The purse of The Metropolitan is $750,000, and the winner gets $430,000 from the total prize money.
The race was introduced in 1863 as a principal race, named the Great Metropolitan Stakes. Since 1979 it has held a Grade I status and was renamed The Metropolitan.
Like the Epsom Handicap, the winner of The Metropolitan gets an exemption from the ballot for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes to be held in April 2023. In the past years, winners of the race have come from a mix of various lead-up races.
During the last ten years, the only last start winner to take out the race was Glencadam Gold in 2012, another one of Gai Waterhouse’s trainees. The trainer enjoys a remarkable performance record at The Metropolitan. Another good tip is to look out for horses with recent great runs at Sydney.
