Niigata Kinen preview

The Niigata Kinen is a Grade 3 race reserved for thoroughbreds ages three and up. The race runs over a distance of 2,000m and takes place on the Niigata Racecourse. In 2021, Meiner Fanrong won the Niigata Kinen.

The Niigata Kinen was held for the first time in 1965 and was promoted to a Grade 3 race in 1984. This year, the Niigata Kinen is scheduled to take place on 4th September and has prize money of around US$809,000, while the race winner gets $374,000 from the purse.

Last year the Niigata Kinen saw a major upset as Meiner Fanrong led the race, while he was not even in the top ten favourites for the race. During the past ten years, Blast Onepiece in 2018 and Martinborough in 2014 were the only runners to salute for the punters.

In 2020 and 2019, the runners leading second on the odds tables were the race winners. So we can say it was not a complete disappointment. For betting purposes, studying the entrants’ forms in previous 2000m features may be a good idea.
