Korea Cup Preview
The Korea Cup is a Group 3 race reserved for thoroughbreds ages three and up. The race runs over a distance of 1,800m and takes place on the Seoul Racecourse. The race is returning to the Seoul race calendar after a break of two years, as the last Korea Cup took place in 2019.
This year will be the fifth edition of the Korea Cup and will take place on 4th September at the Seoul Racecourse. The prize money for the race is KRW 1 Billion, while the winner gets KRW 550,000,000 from the purse.
It is also the first time the race is being held as a Group 3 Race. During the previous runs, Japanese-trained horses have led the race. This year Sekifu is the representative, and having won the Hyogo Junior Grand Prix and a close second in the Saudi Derby in Riyadh and Unicorn Stakes in Tokyo, he has pretty good chances in the Korea Cup. The other international entrant to watch out for is King Shield from Hong Kong.
Trained by Hong Kong’s champion trainer Frankie Lou, who is also familiar with the Seoul sand track, King Shield also stands a good chance.
The locals from the lineup also have pretty good prospects in the race. One of the most prominent contenders is Raon the Fighter, the horse who has won ten out of the twelve times he has competed. The 2019 winner Moonhak Chief also returns to the race, while Haengbok Wangja, the 2021 Grand Prix Stakes winner, is also in line and all set to start this year.
