However, as that win came after the weights were released for the 2021 Grand National, Cloth Cap can race off his old mark of 148. He also carries less than 11-0, like five of the last seven winners. The forecast good ground is also in his favour.
The negatives are that he has never raced over the Grand National fences before, and he will surely be taken on for the lead in a field of 40 runners. However, if jockey Tom Scudamore can get him in a good rhythm and a good early position, the rest of the runners will be fighting it out for second.
What Is The Best Outsider In The Grand National 2021?
Three of the last 10 runnings of the Grand National have been won by horses returned at odds of 33/1, 33/1, and 66/1 so, while the favourite has an obvious chance, it’s impossible to discount the chance of another outsider winning.
One horse that catches the eye at a big price is Alpha Des Obeaux, who is one of several runners that represent Gigginstown Stud in the absence of dual-winner Tiger Roll.
Interestingly, the three 11-year-olds that have won in the last eight years have been returned at 25/1, 33/1, and 66/1, so Alpha Des Obeaux fits the profile of the best outsider at odds of around 66/1.
This former Grade winner may have regressed over the last couple of seasons, but many Grand National winners have been formerly classy horses that have been given a chance by the handicapper. He did fall in the 2018 Grand National but carried 11-4 then and has just 10-9 this year.
He’s also since finished third in a Becher Chase when carrying top-weight and he looked more like his old self when fourth in the Cross-Country Chase last time at Cheltenham. He’ll also prefer the good ground this year, whereas it was soft ground in 2018.
Grand National 2021 Best Picks
There are a lot of good horses carrying less than 11-0 this year and the seven horses burdened with more weight may struggle. As well as Cloth Cap and Alpha Des Obeaux, our 2021 Grand National shortlist includes Anibale Fly and Talkingrisks.
Anibale Fly has run poorly since finishing fifth in the 2019 Grand National off a mark of 164, but he was also fourth off 159 in 2018. He’s also twice finished runner-up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He gets in off 155 this year, carries a much lower weight than on his previous two tries, and looks to have been laid out for the race.
It also looks worth taking a risk on Takingrisks, despite him being older than ideal at the age of 12. He was a good winner last time out, while his win in the 2019 Scottish Grand National catches the eye. He gave Cloth Cap 1lb and a 4-length beating that day and, though Cloth Cap has improved since, Takingrisks doesn’t deserve to be four-times the price of the favourite.
