The Group 2 John F. Feehan Stakes is reserved for thoroughbreds aged 3 and above with weight-for-age conditions. The Moonee Valley Racing Club organises the Feehan Stakes which runs over a distance of 1600m and has prize money of $500,000.

The race was introduced as a principal race in 1948, and in 1978 it was promoted to a group 2 status.

Feehan Stakes Preview and Tips

The Feehan serves as a nice starting point for gallopers eyeing the 2040m Group 1 Cox Plate held on the same track in October. In 2007, El Segundo won the Cox Plate after competing at Feehan. Previously, runners in 2000, 2001, and 2002 completed double at Feehan and Cox Plate.

The race also serves as a lead-up for Underwood stakes, an 1800m Group 1 race held at Caulfield. In 2018, Homesman won the Underwood race, and in 2019 he finished in first place at the Feehan Stakes. He was second at Underwood later that year.

For betting purposes, it is a good idea to watch out for top performers with good fresh records racing first or second up in mile competitions. Prior experience at Moonee Valley and good performance at 1800m to 2000m features is a bonus.
