The Perth Cup is a Group 2 thoroughbred race organised by the Perth Racing Group as a part of the Ascot Racing Carnival. The race has a distance of 2400m and is reserved for thoroughbreds aged three and older with quality handicap conditions. This season, the race is scheduled on New Year’s Day, 1st January 2023 at the Ascot Racecourse, Perth, while the prize money is $500,000.
The Perth Cup was first held in 1887 as a principle race. It was upgraded to the Group I category in 1972, and in 1993, it was shifted to the Group II category.
Perth Cup Betting Tips
Key lead-up races for the Perth Cup include the 1800m Northerly Stakes and the 2100m Ted Van Heemst Stakes. The last horse to complete the Perth Cup and Ted Van Heemst Stakes double was Delicacy in 2015-2016.
Graduates from the Perth Cup often proceed to participate in the Adelaide Cup, a 3200m race held in mid-March. Local stayers with proven performance at the Ascot track in similar distance runs dominate at the Perth Cup. Similarly, runners trained by William Grant have also outshone others at the race, the last being Mississippi Delta in 2020.
Favourites, particularly graduates of the Ted Van Heemst Stakes, lead the betting markets at the Perth Cup. The last favourite to win the Perth Cup was Midnight Blue in 2022, with odds of $4.20. Similarly, in-form mares have performed well in recent years at the race, including Talent Show in 2013, Real Love in 2015, Delicacy in 2016 and Mississippi Delta in 2020.
