The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is a multi-sport event held every 2 years in Southeast Asia. It includes athletes from 11 countries. Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) regulations govern the games, which are supervised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The first edition of the games was held in 1959 in Thailand, with only seven countries participating. The games have since been held every two years, with the exception of the interval between 1965 and 1971 when the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games were staged instead of the SEA Games.
The recent SEA Games, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, and 11 other Vietnamese towns and provinces from May 12–23, 2022, were a spectacle for all of Southeast Asia. Over 4,5,467 participants from 11 different countries competed in the 40 sports spread across 526 events at the 31st Southeast Asian Games.
Forty sports and 526 events were expected to draw up to 10,000 athletes. With the addition of events like Pencak silat, vovinam, and wushu, the national martial arts of Vietnam, Indonesia, and China, the 40 sports that make up the SEA Games 31 are primarily those that are performed at the Olympic Games. The SEA Games hosts were given the option to modify the sports and activities to fit their nation’s strengths and shortcomings better. To make the 31st SEA Games fair for all competitors, Vietnam promised this year to hold games that play to the strengths of all participating nations, removing absolutely no Olympic events.
The SEA Games are organised to take place in Cambodia next year; therefore, the Council announced that Thailand will host the event in 2025, Malaysia in 2027, and Singapore in 2029. Thailand hosted the first Games in 1959 and has since hosted the tournament in 1967, 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2007.
