5 most popular sports in Hungary

Hungary is known for its rich cultural traditions, which also reflect a hint of modern influences. One common thing the Hungarians share with their counterparts is their love for sports. Like other European countries, a wide array of sports is popular among the locals and played extensively.

Since the country is landlocked, popular sports are predominantly land-based, but water sports are also enjoyed widely. Here is a brief account of the five most popular sports in Hungary.

Football In Hungary

When it comes to the most popular form of sports, Hungary is no different from the rest of Europe. Like their counterparts in other parts of the world, the locals have a passion for football like no other.

Hungary is regarded as one of the trendsetters in the field of football with its role in revolutionising the sport in the 1950s. The country also dominated the sport globally around that time. It finished as the runners-up in FIFA World Cup in 1938 and 1954. It has also performed remarkably at the Olympics with three gold medals and a silver and bronze medal.

Hungary also has its domestic league system with a pyramid format. The National Championship 1 is the top league in the country with 12 teams. The league is placed 29th in the UEFA. Local players have shone in the National Championship 1, and many have been a part of premium leagues like the Bundesliga and English Premier League.

Motorsport In Hungary

Next, we have motorsport on the list. As a landlocked country, it is not surprising that land-based sports forms are more popular in Hungary.

The country was the first in the Eastern Bloc countries to build a Formula One paddock for a Grand Prix in 1985, called the Hungaroring.

The facility was constructed outside of Budapest in Mogyorod and organised the first race the next year. To date, the Formula One circuit is the fastest-constructed circuit, being constructed in a span of eight months only.

The races held at the circuit draw thousands of spectators, with a large number of Polish racing fans also joining the stands to see their favourite Polish racers in action. The Hungaroring has been home to various racing events, including the European Truck Racing Championship, World Touring Car Championship, and the DTM.

ESports In Hungary

When the trend of ESports became prevalent globally, it also became very popular in Hungary. The rapid influx of technology in the country further contributed to the popularity of Esports.

The players are highly regarded and popular, like athletes in physical sports. The gaming events are shown in online streams and also on TV. The rewards and prize money for such events have also increased considerably over the years.

In 2013, an NGO named E-sportsmilla was established to encourage individuals to join the world of Esports. Over the years, the organisation has made major headway and contributed significantly to increasing the popularity of Esports in the country.

Athletics In Hungary

Another sport where Hungary excels is athletics. Hungarians have shone on the global athletics landscape and, despite their small size, made their mark in the Olympics. Hungary has scored one of the top three positions around 491 times in the summer Olympics. The country ranks 10th in the Olympics Athletics competitions, but if we consider its population size and medals per capita, Hungary ranks much higher.

Some sports where the players have excelled include swimming, gymnastics, fencing, canoeing, wrestling, water polo, etc. A major reason for the country’s success in athletics is the locals’ love for various forms of athletics activities. The locals love to participate in various forms of aquatic sports like swimming and kayaking and make full use of the rivers and lakes in the country.

Basketball In Hungary

Lastly, we have basketball on the list. Like football, Hungarians love basketball also, and there was a time when their team was regarded as one of the best in the continent.

Between the 1940s and 1960s, the Hungarian basketball team dominated the European basketball landscape and won numerous medals at basketball championships in Europe. The team also qualified for the summer Olympics in various instances.

However, those days are in the past, and currently, the team is not as strong as it used to be. Only a few players have played in NBA, and currently, the only player to be a part of the association is David Kornel.

Besides these five sports forms, other sports that are also very popular in Hungary include ice hockey and rugby. The national ice hockey team has been participating in various competitions including the IIHF World Hockey Championships, IIHF European Championships, and the Olympic Games since the 1920s.
